ECOSIA: THE SEARCH ENGINE THAT PLANT TREES

Whilst everybody is screaming for the Earth to breathe, there is a kinda weirdo Internet search engine that is now gaining public attention, on which in every search you make, you grow trees—the Ecosia.

What is Ecosia? It is a 12-year-existing search engine sprang and is based in Berlin, Germany. It donates 80% of its profits to nonprofit organizations that focus on reforestation. As of writing, it has about 5M users in English and 27 other languages worldwide.

How it began? 38-year-old German Christian Kroll founded this eco-friendly search engine in 7 December 2009. Christian saw the link between globalization and climate change and how planting new trees could actually neutralize the emission of carbon dioxide on a big scale. Christian then realized he wanted to engage in forest preservation to help the environment. He came up with the idea of a search engine that helped finance planting and restoration projects.

How does Ecosia makes money then turns into growing trees? Like any other search engine, Ecosia earns money from clicks on the advertisements. It gains a few cents for every click on an ad from Bing—or a portion of the purchase price made through an affiliate link. Ecosia then gives the profits from this ad revenue to planting projects.

Does one search finance one new tree? No, it takes approximately 45 searches to finance the planting of one tree. Depending on clicks on ads and how much search ad revenue these generate for Ecosia, it may take fewer searches.

Where does Ecosia plant trees? Ecosia supports over 20 tree-planting projects in 16 different countries: Peru, Brazil, Madagascar, Nicaragua, Haiti, Colombia, Spain, Morocco, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Indonesia. To achieve this, Ecosia works with local partners who are able to monitor trees on the ground.

Is Ecosia planting project exists in Philippines? In 2021, Ecosia identified a forest in Aklan as the first site of its project in the Philippines on which abaca (Musa textilis) has to be planted.

How many trees have already been planted worldwide? As of writing, nearly 150M trees have already planted, resulting in over 50,000 metric tonnes of CO2 being removed from the atmosphere each month.

How legit, transparent is Ecosia? Ecosia is a 100% safe and legit search engine. They openly publish its financial and business reports for the public. These reports will tell you how Ecosia makes money from your searches and how exactly it spends that money.

Is Ecosia a virus or spam? There is no truth in this claim.

What are the disadvantages of Ecosia? It uses Bing to provide you search results. It shows limited images in search outcomes. You may not be able to find your query related results on Ecosia sometimes.
